Awarded the Mbokodo Award for Women in the Arts in Literature, the ATKV (Afrikaans Language and Culture Association) Award for Non-Fiction, and the kykNet/Rapport Award for Non-Fiction, Elsabé Brits draws from a treasure trove of previously private sources, including the diaries and scrapbooks of Emily Hobhouse as well as numerous letters she discovered in Canada, to write a revealing new biography of this remarkable Englishwoman. Hobhouse has been little honored in her own country, yet she continues to be revered in South Africa, where she worked courageously, self-sacrificingly, and tirelessly to save lives and alleviate the suffering of thousands of women and children held in camps set up by British forces during the Anglo-Boer War, in which an estimated over 27,000 Boer women and children lost their lives. Her ashes are interred at the National Women's Monument in Bloemfontein. During World War I, Hobhouse was a fervent pacifist. She organized the drafting, signing, and publication, in January 1915, of the "Open Christmas Letter" addressed "to the Women of Germany and Austria." Attempting to initiate a process of peaceful resolution, she secretly met with the German Foreign Minister Gottlieb von Jagow in Berlin, for which some accused her of being a traitor. In the immediate aftermath of the war, she worked for the Save the Children Fund in Leipzig and Vienna, feeding thousands of children daily for over a year who would otherwise have starved. She later started her own food relief program to address continuing hunger. Despite having played a crucial role in saving thousands of lives during two wars, Hobhouse died alone - rejected by her country, her friends, and even some of her relatives. Brits brings the inspiring and often astounding story of Emily, spanning three continents, back to light.
