The New Kokkinia - Nikea was founded in a landfill in the northern part of Piraeus in October 1922. It is the largest refugee settlement in Attica and the second largest in Greece after Thessaloniki.
Through historical sources and records from the Municipality, the century-long upward trajectory of the area is documented, from the settlement of the first Anatolian refugees to the present day. The miserable initial living conditions and diseases, the struggle for survival, the first churches, the first schools, the first hospital, entertainment, and social life.
The Resistance against the Germans, the blood sacrifices in the Battle of Kokkinia and the Blockade of August 17, 1944, as well as testimonies from hostages of the concentration camps reveal the reality of a city that was literally born from its own roots and red soil, and today is a modern metropolis.
