This book offers a comprehensive overview of the fabric works of the legendary artist Louise Bourgeois, from the last two decades of her career. "I have always had a fascination with the needle," she said, "the magical power of the needle. The needle is used to repair damages. It is a statement of forgiveness." This series of works began when the artist started incorporating clothes from all stages of her life into her art and later expanded to include a variety of other fabrics, such as linens, handkerchiefs, tapestries, and embroideries. The fabric works explore themes of identity and sexuality, trauma and memory, guilt and restoration, and act as metaphors for emotional and psychological states. The catalog — which accompanies the exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London, and the Gropius Bau, Berlin — includes works from many series, including the monumental Cell installations, figure sculptures, and abstract drawings.
