Description

A highly illustrated account of one of the main battles of the 13th-century wars in Italy, depicted in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, who was one of the combatants. The Battle of Campaldino was one of the significant clashes between the Guelphs and Ghibellines—the main political factions in the city-states of central and northern Italy. This battle foreshadowed Florence's rise to dominance in the Tuscany region and was among the last instances where Italian militias faced each other in battle, as the 14th century saw the rise of condottieri in Italy's wars. In this study, distinguished medieval historians Kelly De Vries and Nicolò Capponi have uncovered new material from the battlefield, and using all available sources, they bring new life to this vibrant and captivating battle. Pages: 96, Year of Publication: 0801, Dimensions: 18.4x18.4cm
