The magical treatise of the 13th century, Ars Notoria, offers a secret description of the angel Pamphilius, revealing divine magic to King Solomon, through which he gains his famous wisdom and knowledge, thereby expanding the biblical narrative in which Solomon received a vision from God.

The writings of Solomon were transmitted in the first century by the philosopher Apollonius of Tyana, who provided a commentary titled Golden Flowers (Flores Aurei), which is contained in Ars Notoria. The magical text presents a complete system of angelic magic consisting of prayers addressed to angels, using figures called noes, with the aim of acquiring scholastic and heavenly knowledge.

Due to its increasing popularity among university students, the magical ritual was revised multiple times, producing five treatises dating from the 13th to the 15th century: The Work of Works (Opus Operum), the Book of the Flowers of Heavenly Teaching compiled by the French Benedictine monk John of Morigny, the Short Art (Ars Brevis), the abridged version attributed to Thomas of Toledo, and the Pauline Art (Ars Paulina), thus establishing an entire tradition of notary.

In the new and complete translation of Ars Notoria, based on the critical Latin edition by Julien Veronese, translator Matthias Castle presents the classical magical text, both the short and extensive versions, including four of the later treatises. Castle explains how these theurgical ritual practices were performed, offering particular attention to all the original iconographic figures (noes) and how the art of memory relates to angelic magic.
