MORTAL. FAITH. LEGENDARY.

In a land without magic, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She harbors not the slightest sympathy for the wicked king, who rules from his glass throne, yet she has not come here to kill him. She has come to win her freedom. If she can defeat twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors, all opponents in the same competition, the Assassin will be released to serve as the Champion of the King.

Her name is Selina Sardothien. The crown prince will challenge her. The captain of the guard will protect her. And a princess from a distant land will become her friend. But something rotten lurks in the castle, something with deadly intentions. Once her opponents begin dying under mysterious circumstances, one after another, Selina's fight for freedom transforms into a battle for survival, and simultaneously a desperate effort to eradicate this evil before it brings ruin to the world.

Thrilling and dynamic, The Glass Throne is the first book in the eponymous series, which has achieved international success and captivated readers all over the world.

After a year of slavery in the Salt Mines of Endovier, Celaena Sardothien was used to being led everywhere in chains under the threat of a sword. Most of the thousands of slaves in Endovier received the same treatment, although Celaena was always accompanied by an extra half-dozen guards, to and from the mines. This was expected, since they were dealing with Adarlan’s most notorious assassin. What Celaena did not normally expect, however, was the presence of a hooded, black-clad man at her side, as was the case at this moment. The man held her tightly by the arm as he led her through the halls of the gleaming building where most of Endovier’s officials and overseers were housed. They moved quickly through corridors, up and down stairs, and changed direction so often that, in the end, Celaena had no chance of finding the exit on her own.

At least, that was her escort’s intention, since she had not missed the fact that they had gone up and down the same staircase within a few minutes. Nor did she overlook how they changed direction as they crossed the various levels, even though the building had a typical layout, consisting, as it was, of corridors and stairwells. As if there was any chance she would lose her bearings so easily. If it hadn’t been obvious that the hooded man was trying so hard, Celaena might have even felt insulted. They found themselves in a particularly long corridor, where silence prevailed, with only the sound of their footsteps breaking it. Although the man gripping her arm was tall and strong, Celaena could not make out the slightest detail of his face, hidden as it was by his hood.

  • "Throne of Glass" is one of the strongest starts in the fantasy genre and offers a story that keeps you constantly on edge. The protagonist, Celaena, faces dangerous political games and forces beyond imagination, creating a plot full of suspense. It's the kind of book that makes you want to cancel every other obligation just to immerse yourself in its pages, while at the same time you feel the need to slow down your reading so the magic lasts as long as possible.

Sarah J. Maas manages, through her descriptive and direct writing, to convey every possible emotion to the reader. During the reading, you go from laughter to anger and from utter suspense to emotion, as the vividness of the characters makes identifying with them inevitable. It's not just an adventure, but a journey that fills you with images and intensity until the very last page.
