The field of this study is defined by the Greek football literature of the twentieth century and how, through it, with a simultaneous examination of the terms of literary and genre determination, aspects of the philosophy of football emerge, that is, views on the role of football as a personal and social experience and as a factor that is distinguished in the existential oscillations of the authors and consequently of the readers.
The fact that our research field is temporally defined by the twentieth century is due to two reasons: (a) the beginning of Greek football literature, with texts from which elements of the philosophy of football also emerge, is traced back to 1930, at the intersection of two decades that were complex and multifactorial in terms of the evolution of modern Greek literary expression; (b) by the end of this century, the central trends of Greek football literature with a philosophical background had been shaped, which continue to be enriched with texts up to the present day.
Texts centered around the experience of football, some of which perceive the sport as a positive signifier of human existence and others as a negative factor in individual and social life; texts in which metaphors and similes prevail as expressive ways to indicate either positively or negatively the existential adventure in football terms; finally, texts in which football as imagery and reference plays a peripheral role, contributing, however, to the strengthening of the meaningful fabric.
