The A-wing Fighter (full and correct name: RZ-1 A-wing interceptor) is a starfighter from the Star Wars universe. A-Wing fighters are approximately 9.6 meters long, about 6.5 meters wide, and around 3 meters tall. They feature a class 1 hyperdrive, and their primary armament consists of two Borstel RG-9 laser cannons.
The A-Wing was designed and manufactured during the Galactic Civil War. Its main use was by the Rebellion as a countermeasure against TIE fighters. A-Wings outperformed their opponents in speed and survivability on the battlefield, while also having better armament. However, they lagged in maneuverability.
It first appeared on screen in the film Return of the Jedi. Its standard armament includes two laser cannons and two missile launchers, while propulsion is provided by twin ion engines.
The A-wing was designed based on the experience of the Battle of Yavin, as a very fast and agile machine, primarily intended for dogfighting capable of countering Imperial TIE fighters. It is smaller and lighter than the X-wing. During battles, the A-Wing proved to be exceptional and a worthy opponent to Imperial machines. Notably, its production was much more decentralized compared to that of the X-wing.
