Historical background: In 1971, according to decisions and agreements in collaboration with the Mila design office, work began on the successor to the Mi-2. It was supposed to be a helicopter that would replace the Mi-4. In 1976, the idea was implemented as an entirely new product of the company. In 1978, the prototype work was completed. On November 16, 1979, the new helicopter made its first jump into the air. In 1987, the first 10 machines marked W-3 were delivered. In the W-3T version (military transport version) used by the Polish Air Force since 1993.
