What was the artistic activity in Thessaloniki in the second half of the twentieth century? This study deeply explores the artistic production and its creators in the co-capital during the critical fifty years after World War II and the period of the Civil War.
Artistic production refers to the art of painting, sculpture, graphic arts, photography, architecture, and artistic interventions in space. Given that historical, social, and economic contexts influence the development of art and culture, the trajectory of visual arts and the conditions for the creation of works are examined.
Cultural data are analyzed, their intercultural character is presented, and finally, the types and artistic potential active in the city of Thessaloniki during this specific period are recorded. The inclusion of works in the international visual horizon is a necessary condition.
Consequently, references to concepts of modernism, postmodernism, globalization, and other aspects of contemporary art are continuous and enlightening regarding the form and content of the works.
Moreover, critical commentary on historical situations and cultural and social events was among the author's priorities, as they constitute the framework for shaping art in Thessaloniki and throughout Greece.
