The oud transitioned, a hundred years ago, from the then Ottoman Istanbul and Smyrna to the Greek territory where it is played and heard to this day.
This book offers a multifaceted approach to the instrument and the world in which it has lived and continues to live. Both practical and theoretical issues that concern those who play the oud are presented: from how to change the strings to how my body functions when I play, as well as Pythagorean scales, tuning, the theory of maqam, rhythms, and usul, and how this applies to the oud.
The book contains concentrated material that is useful for those who play, teach, or want to learn the oud. Its goal is to provide practical tools and inspiration during the solitary journey of studying and exploring the instrument, while also opening pathways to communication and connection through music.
It was written concurrently and is linked to the book "Tropical Music and Maqam – 166 Musical Pieces for Interpretation and Teaching," published by Fagotto Books, Athens 2023, by the same author, which includes sheet music for pieces of tropical music.
