When the controls are locked, all controls except the ON/OFF control are deactivated.
The buttons respond to touch, so you don't need to apply pressure. Use the round part of your finger, not the edge. You will hear a sound signal every time a touch is registered. Make sure the controls are always clean, dry, and not covered by any object (e.g. cookware or cloth). Even a thin water membrane can make it difficult to operate the buttons.
