The treaty signed on July 24, 1923, in Lausanne, Switzerland, annulled and revised the Treaty of Sèvres from August 1920. This marks the final act of a historical process that began in 1914, with the outbreak of World War I, and culminated in the defeat of the Greek army in August 1922 by the Turkish nationalist forces of Mustafa Kemal.
The Asia Minor Catastrophe was an unprecedented humanitarian disaster for the Greeks, Armenians, and other non-Muslim communities of the Ottoman Empire. The book analyzes the two treaties (Sèvres and Lausanne), the geopolitical context in which they were signed, as well as their provisions, the National Schism and the management of the Asia Minor challenge, the hopes and disappointments regarding the Pontic Question, the stance of the Great Powers, the causes of the Asia Minor catastrophe, and the end of the tragedy.
We also follow the fate of the refugees of '22 in Greece (rehabilitation, treatment by political forces, relationship with the left, electoral behavior), as well as the refugees in Russia and the USSR.
