Description

Cumin (Cuminum cynimun L) is a leafy plant that grows low to the ground in China, India, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean region. The fruit of the plant is called cumin seed and is popular worldwide as a spice. It is widely used in various international cuisines such as Latin American, Middle Eastern, North African, Mediterranean, and Indian. It is available in both whole seed and ground form.

It is mentioned in the Old Testament and in the Gospel of Matthew. Dioscorides describes cumin as a cultivated plant of Asia Minor and Southern Italy, as well as its medicinal properties. The leaves consist of filamentous-capillary segments, while the flowers are white and appear at the end of spring. The harvesting of the seeds is done by hand to collect the highest quality seeds of the crop.

Cumin has a warm, earthy aroma with sweet and simultaneously bitter tones. The best flavor is achieved after lightly roasting. Cumin seeds should be incorporated early in the recipe so that the spice has the necessary time to release its aromas. When the spice is added to hot broth and oil, its aromas spread and blend with the other ingredients of the recipe.

Ground cumin is found in various blends as a key spice, such as in curry powder. It is also used as a seasoning to flavor sauces, minced meat, beans, and other dishes.

  • Dosage: Because the flavor of ground cumin is more concentrated, you will need a smaller dosage.
  • For a recipe that calls for 1 tablespoon of cumin, use 1 1/4 tablespoons of cumin seeds.

Warning: All of the above is for informational purposes. Before using any recipe, seek the advice of a qualified health professional. If you are taking medication, ensure that there are no interactions.
