Imported by the Arabs, the “azulejos” (initially white and blue ceramic tiles) were fully adopted by the Portuguese when King Manuel I, during his visit to the Alhambra palace in Southern Spain, was captivated by the impressive beauty of the Moorish decorative tiles. The king, dazzled by the interior beauty of the Alhambra, immediately ordered his own palace in Portugal to be decorated with similar wall tiles.
