The history of Tripoli from the late Byzantine years until its destruction by Ibrahim Pasha in February 1828. How, from a small settlement, it gradually became the economic, military, and political center of the Ottomans in the Peloponnese.
The fall of Tripoli in September 1821 is the pivotal event of the first year of the Revolution. Drawing elements from historical sources, the author focuses on describing the events that preceded the Revolution and the crucial role played by the siege of the city during the War of Independence.
What took place in Tripoli and the surrounding area, both during the Greek War of Independence and the subsequent civil conflicts, as well as the interventions of the Great Powers, constitute an important chapter in modern Greek history. The thousands of dead – Greeks, Turks, Albanians, and Jews – combined with the complete destruction of the city by Ibrahim in 1828, make Tripoli a martyr city.
