Initially, I am not the ultra-demanding "athlete" that needs depth gauges, etc. However, I do running, hiking, and windsurfing, and I wanted a watch that has good GPS, a nice display so I know where I'm moving and can push myself more. I really like the display as it is very accurate and has nice colors, as well as the accuracy of the navigation system. For the things I want it for, it is more than enough. I would only say that it needs a case to protect its casing. The more expensive models have protection as they are made from more expensive materials like titanium or aluminum. Other than that, the battery lasts me easily a week with full use. For someone who doesn't need something overly specialized, I fully recommend it

Why did I end up buying a low-end watch like the Forerunner 165?
- First of all, it is a nice, lightweight, and small smartwatch, thinner and lighter than most comparable watches on the market.
- It has an altimeter function, unlike many comparable watches like the Vivoactive 5 or the Polar Ignite 3.
- The total features. This is perhaps the most controversial part, as all these differences are only in the software, but software development is expensive, so I understand that Garmin needs to release different versions at different price points.
- Fortunately, the most important features are here. This watch has many more features than the then high-end Fenix 3 HR. In my opinion, the total features make the FR 165 more exciting than more expensive options on the market. Some controversial features are missing, such as Training Status and Training Readiness (which I personally find unnecessary).
However, the most important features are present, e.g., HRV status, sleep tracking, stress measurement, and body battery.
- I like the AMOLED touchscreen so far.
- Now what do I miss compared to high-end watches? Hotkeys, especially for the flashlight and timer/alarm, but I got used to the control menu. The four data fields are at the lower level of updates, but they are sufficient since I can have more than twelve data pages.
- It would be nice to have Gorilla Glass, but the chemically strengthened glass has held up so far. The compass might be good in some cases, but if I really need it, I can install a CIQ widget.
In summary, I think the FR 165 encompasses the essence of a good sports watch. It’s hard to find real drawbacks, and my assessment is that this watch does everything the majority of people/athletes/runners will ever need. If you need some specific functions that the FR 165 does not have - e.g., power measurement support, lactate threshold control, or extremely long battery life - you should definitely look at more expensive higher-spec models or older models that do not always have today’s feature set.
For me, the FR 165 does its job well.
