Description

Description

The MC888 Ultra by ZTE is a mobile router, a device to which other devices (e.g., computer, mobile phone, television) connect wirelessly, and it distributes internet access to them. It receives internet access through the built-in modem and uses the mobile network by installing a SIM card. The SIM card must have an active connection with a data package.

It connects to the 5G network, which offers significantly higher speeds than 4G. For the device to operate at this speed, there must be corresponding coverage from the mobile network in the area where we are located.
It is of Wi‑Fi 6 generation, the most modern Wi-Fi standard that offers speeds up to 40% higher than Wi-Fi 5. It coordinates communication with connected devices to consume less battery and works better in environments with many Wi-Fi devices. Ideal for homes with many smart devices. It broadcasts a signal on two frequencies, 2.4 & 5GHz. It offers higher speeds compared to single band and connection of more devices. The 2.4GHz frequency is the most widespread and has a long range. The 5GHz provides higher speed than 2.4GHz but is more sensitive to obstacles (e.g., walls) that reduce its range. This difference and its more limited use help it have fewer interferences from other networks.

The best purchase I have made in years!
I am in an area that has a "dead zone" for all networks to the point that I completely broke my contracts with COSMOTE & VODAFONE.
Nevertheless, I have not seen less than 15MBPS with this particular router and you can see in the photos how much speed my phone (Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus) gets in exactly the same spot to understand the difference.

    10/10!

    UPDATE 03/26.
I changed area and provider, locked the router to the band that gives the maximum possible and I see speeds up to 400Mbps. During the day, due to network load, it drops, but it consistently gives at least 50Mbps to EVERY device, meaning I can watch 4K movies on the TV and have at least 50Mbps on my phone without lag or anything else. The best purchase I have ever made to this day.

Fast 5G router installed with a Cosmote card in an area with coverage. It comfortably reaches 300/60 generally stable. It heats up relatively lightly, depending on the period and the space. Easy to install, the browser interface is simple and useful.

I did extensive research many months before making a purchase. I looked at all the routers in the range of €500 and below and studied all the official specifications from the manufacturer and concluded that this particular router is the best one can buy at this moment for a cost of up to €500 (possibly even higher).

For basic use, all you need is a SIM card and power supply. You wait 1-2 minutes and you are already on the internet without needing to make any adjustments. Literally plug and play, and very fast on reboot.

For additional settings, there is the ZTELink app. Personally, I didn't find it particularly convenient, and I preferred to make my settings in a browser environment.

I am in an area where 5G coverage is poor. Nevertheless, the router, thanks to its amazing antennas and the X62 R16 modem, scores 80-100 mbps on a 5G network at the same time that the iPhone 15 Pro with its fantastic and much superior X70 modem does 30-40 mbps.

The wifi is not bad, but I would like a bit more range, as it has a relatively similar coverage to my old Asus router which cost half the price.

I did a firmware update, and I also did a reset because I lost the new admin password, without any problems and very smoothly.

I mention that the X62 R16 modem is not the same as the X62. Also, I am not sure to what extent there are infrastructures at this moment in Greece to utilize the X62 R16. In any case, for now, one will not see a difference from the simple X62 that is in the MC 888 Pro, but the X62 R16 will show its value in the future when and if our 5G network is upgraded. This is also the reason I chose to spend a bit more money instead of getting the Pro. I hope in the coming years we will have a 5G SA network to make the investment worthwhile.
