Published on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Carl David Friedrich's birth, this catalogue represents the most comprehensive retrospective of Friedrich in many years. Carl David Friedrich (1774–1840) is known as the romantic painter par excellence, and his works are emblems of a time of significant social upheavals. His landscapes and paintings broke with traditional depiction norms and paved new ways in the experience and reflectiveness of mankind's ambivalent relationship with nature. The catalogue revisits the artist's revolutionary work in the face of pressing challenges of the climate crisis and colonial abstinence. It focuses on more than sixty paintings, including many significant iconic works, and around 100 drawings. Selected works by Friedrich's colleagues, primarily August Heinrich, Georg Friedrich Kersting, Ernst Ferdinand Oehme, and Johann Alexander Thiele, are also presented. The second part of the book focuses on the contemporary reception of his work. In contributions ranging from video and photography to installations, about twenty artists working in various genres and media explore the romantic era, its attitude towards nature, and the art of Carl David Friedrich. Participants include Alex Gräin, Swantje Gintzel, Jochen Hein, Johanna Karlsson, Hiroyuki Masuyama, Laudila Milanova, Mariele Neudecker, Ulrike Rosenbach, Susan Schüpppli, Xander Turri, and Kehinde Wiley.
