Description

Amidst the revolutionary fervor, the 1820s raised critical issues regarding the ability of the reborn Greek political society to function as a collective subject. The vision of the National Assemblies of the Struggle pertained to a state of active citizens, not a political system based on an aggregate of individuals.

On the other hand, the spirit of the renaissance of Hellenism, with its prospects, internal conflicts, deadlocks, and oscillations, shaped a new reality that often adapted, as deemed necessary, to the parameters of the formation of the national states of the 19th century.

The chapters of this volume explore the interactions between state designs, historical circumstances, and national identity.

The volume is divided into three parts: a) State Formation and Political Community, b) National Identity and International Environment, c) Heritage, Challenges, and Prospects. In this way, an interdisciplinary assessment of specific aspects of the political and national legacy of the 1820s is attempted.
