Many of these stories, like his great novels, reveal his unique compassion for the lonely and isolated, exploring complex psychological challenges and subtly blending rich character and philosophical melancholies regarding the (often) dark sides of the human soul, all in a peculiar mix of terrible seriousness and wild humor. In "Notes from Underground," the Underground Man deconstructs utilitarian philosophy and instead celebrates a perverse but lively masochism. In "A Christmas Tree and a Wedding," the successful pursuit of a young girl by a lecherous old man is mentioned. In "Bobok," Ivan Ivanovich hears corpses chatting in a cemetery and ends up condemning their corruption. In "A Gentle Spirit," the narrator describes his growing awareness that he is responsible for his wife's suicide. Ultimately, as a commentator on spiritual stagnation, Dostoevsky has no rival.
