The work "London Labour and the London Poor" originated from a series of articles written by the great journalist Henry Mayhew between 1849 and 1850. Twelve years later, it evolved into a complete depiction of the working people in the world's largest city of the 19th century: a four-volume report on the hopes, customs, protests, and habits of the working classes, allowing them to tell their own stories. Combining practicality with compassion, Mayhew worked free from political theory and solely aimed to report the lives, professions, and arts of London's poor. This anthology shows how well he achieved that. From fruit sellers to ex-convicts, from chimney sweeps to the homeless, London's marginalized come to life in a unique way - their plight is expressed through an impressive mix of first-hand accounts, Mayhew's perceptions, and sharp statistics.
