John Julius Norwich was born in 1929 and was educated at institutions such as Upper Canada College, Eton, and New College, Oxford, where he earned a degree in French and Russian language. He is the author of histories on Normandy, the Republic of Venice, and the Byzantine Empire, and has presented several historical documentaries on television.
