Rüdiger Safranski explores the life of Goethe, the author who is considered the "Shakespeare" of German literature. Goethe (1749–1832) revived an emerging German nationality and the European continent with his electrifying novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther." Safranski analyzed Goethe's work based on primary sources as well as his correspondence with contemporaries and the comments they exchanged with each other, to create a vivid portrait of the iconic figure of the Romantic era. In the context of the cultural and political turmoil of Europe in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, Goethe, who crossed paths with almost all the great personalities of his time, is recreated here impressively. As Safranski shows, Goethe's greatest creation, even when compared to his masterpiece "Faust," was his own life.
