Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) was one of the great masters of Victorian mystery and horror fiction, and can be considered the father of the modern ghost story. In his work "In a Glass Darkly" (1872), one of his most celebrated books, it is presented as the archive of Dr. Hesselius, a pioneering psychologist.

These five stories represent some of Le Fanu's most successful creations, which transcend the traditional conventions of the time. While he draws from gothic conventions - the book includes both ghosts and vampires - Le Fanu redefines the boundaries of supernatural fiction. He was not interested in the crude depiction of other worlds to offer the reader a pleasurable sense of fear. Le Fanu's concern was more with examining the effects of the supernatural experience on the soul of his protagonist, paving the way for the work of Henry James and M. R. James.

This volume is an essential foundation of modern horror and remains one of the finest collections of eerie fantasy in the language.
