Translation: Antonis M. Loutovitsis. With Introduction: Ray Fernes.
The three essays in this collection, all coming from Nietzsche's last logical months, present him in his most stimulating and controversial form: the prophetic declarations of the prophet (along with the vague form of Übermensch) are set aside, as the emphasis is placed on humor, completeness, and astonishing approaches, forcing the reader to confront uncomfortable truths and re-examine every commonly accepted 'truth.' Thinking with Nietzsche, according to Jaspers, means standing your ground against him, and indeed we are renewed and provoked by the whirlpool of his thoughts, by concepts that challenge and explore.
In "Twilight of the Idols," "Antichrist," and "Ecce Homo," Nietzsche writes with dizzying speed about his origins, his opponents, and his hopes for humanity. The books are mainly epigrammatic and aphoristic, allowing this poet-philosopher to astonish and enchant us with their strange and bold nature. "Whoever fights monsters," Nietzsche told us, "should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster, and if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you." Reader, beware.
