Published anonymously in 1776, the year of the United States Declaration of Independence, Paine's "Common Sense" became an immediate best-seller, with fifty-six editions printed just that year. It was this pamphlet, more than any other factor, that helped ignite the movement that established the independence of the United States. From his experience in revolutionary politics, Paine drew on those principles of fundamental human rights that, as he believed, must apply regardless of the excesses committed to achieve them, and which he later articulated in his work "Rights of Man".
