Gaius Julius Caesar remains the most famous Roman general of all time. Although he never bore the title, historians from Suetonius have practically judged him as the first "emperor" – after all, no other name in history has been associated with a title of imperial power. Caesar was a formidable figure who, for better or worse, changed the history of Rome forever. His absolute ambition matched only by his wisdom as a commander, and the conquest of Gaul brought Rome its first major territorial expansion beyond the Mediterranean world. His charismatic leadership inspired his soldiers not only on missions "beyond the limits of the world" – to Britain – but also in the subsequent civil war that elevated him to the highest authority. It is rarely appreciated, however, that the army he led was as diverse and cosmopolitan as those of later centuries, and only recently has a broader study of a series of evidence allowed a more accurate picture of him to emerge. Based on a wide range of new research, the authors examine Julius Caesar's armies in detail, creating an analytical picture of how they lived and fought.
