From the time of Pushkin, Russian poets have been famous for their ability to combine private and public experience in lyric poetry with a fullness and intensity not observed elsewhere. This collection of poems, covering two centuries, includes works by Lermontov, Tyutchev, Fet, Annensky, Mayakovsky, Bely, Mandelstam, Akhmatova, Tsvetaeva, Pasternak, Brodsky, and other lesser-known but equally remarkable poets. The text is divided into six sections. Russian poets constantly reflect on their art, which is why the first section is titled 'The Muse'. Their other great theme is Russia itself, which is explored in the second and third sections. The fourth section presents the inner world, while the fifth and sixth focus on the traditional themes of love and mortality. Poetry has often been a matter of life and death in Russia, where Mandelstam was not the only poet lost in the Gulag. The comfortable private domain familiar to many English and American writers hardly exists in a country where political realities are pressing - one of the reasons for the fierce intensity found in many of these poems.
