The first part of the double performance "Angels in America," by Tony Kushner, is an epic drama set during the Reagan era in America and has been recognized as one of the greatest performances of the 20th century.
Prior, visited by the ghosts of his ancestors and abandoned by his lover after his AIDS diagnosis, wonders if he is still sane when angels choose him as their prophet. The powerful Roy Cohn also has the virus - but believes only the powerless can have this disease and thus opposes his diagnosis.
In the "melting pot where nothing has melted" of modern America, the nation's reaction to the disease - and the afflicted - is revealed.
The performance "Millennium Approaches" premiered in May 1991 at the Eureka Theatre Company in San Francisco, directed by David Esbjornson. In London, it premiered in January 1992 in a National Theatre production at the Cottesloe Theatre, directed by Declan Donnellan.
The performance has won numerous awards, including Best Play at the Evening Standard Awards in 1992, Best New Play at the Critics' Circle Awards in 1992, Best Play at the Tony Awards in 1993, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993.
