There are two Student Books in Jìn bù, one for each year of study. Each book includes a variety of activities so that the lessons cater to different abilities. Each chapter of the Student Book includes:

• activities that cover all four language skills on every page
• many illustrations and photographs to maintain students' interest
• grammar tips on each page to help students understand key concepts
• writing exercises to assist in acquiring characters
• the "Exploring Characters" section that shows students how radical words relate to their meanings, aiding memory
• a section that explores Chinese culture
