After winning Olympic medals for Britain in 1920, Harry Edward (1898–1973) decided to try his luck in America. This country was full of exhilarating opportunities and pervasive racism. Extremely capable and active, Harry found himself alongside kings and presidents, influencing the revival of Black theater during the Harlem Renaissance, and became an ardent humanitarian and advocate for child welfare.
He was called upon at some of the most significant moments of the 20th century, worked alongside figures like W. E. B. Du Bois and Orson Welles, and witnessed two world wars and the civil rights movement. However, he was frustrated at nearly every turn. At the end of his life, he recorded his story, creating this autobiography that combines sports and activism, race and racism on both sides of the Atlantic. His manuscript remained unpublished until now. This is Edward's deeply compelling life story—and a poignant testament to his desire to shape a better world.
