FIVE MONTHS LATER

Iris was running in the rain with a broken heel and her worn trench coat. Her chest swelled with hope, which gave her speed and luck as she crossed the tram tracks downtown. She had been waiting for this day for weeks and knew she was ready. Even though she was soaked, hungry, and with a broken heel. The first twinge of worry came when she entered the lobby. The building was old, built before the defeat of the gods. On the ceiling, some of the dead gods were painted, and although there were cracks and the light from the low chandeliers was dim, Iris always raised her eyes and looked at them. Gods and goddesses dancing among the clouds, with long golden-embroidered cloaks and stars shining in their hair, their gaze turned downward. Sometimes it seemed to her that those painted eyes were watching her, and Iris shivered. She took off her broken right shoe and limped to the elevator. Just the thought of him made her thoughts about the gods vanish instantly. Maybe the rain had delayed Roman too, and so she still had hope.
