This book explores the fascination of Symbolist artists with ancient Greek art and myth, as well as the role that the erotic dimension played in their art. At the end of the 19th century, the Symbolist movement inspired artists to turn towards the subconscious, attempting to reveal the secrets of human nature through their symbolic art. Their greatest interest and fear was the sexuality of humans, both male and female. Based on the traditions of Academic neoclassical art, but with new vitality, they turned again to Greek art and myth for inspiration. This classical heritage once again became a means for artists to express their dreams, ideas, and enthusiasms, as well as their concerns. The terrifying sirens of Gustave Moreau, the otherworldly heroines of Odilon Redon, or the fleeting spheres of Felicien Rops all played a part in this new and unprecedented chapter of tradition. The book shows how the Symbolists reinvented Greek sculpture and transferred it to new and unusual circumstances, as the imaginary inner worlds of the artists were mapped onto the landscapes of Greek myth. It demonstrates how they made the Greek body, whether female, male, androgynous or sexual other, simultaneously an object of beauty, desire, fear and - in some cases - terror.
