Description

THE MODERN CLASSIC NOVEL IN A NEW TRANSLATION 1850. Adam Ewing, an American notary, returns from the Chatham Islands to California. During his journey, he is approached by Dr. Gus, who gives him a treatment for a rare type of brain parasite…

1931, Belgium. Robert Frobisher, a disinherited bisexual composer, manages to worm his way into the home of a beleaguered maestro, his seductive wife, and their young daughter.

1970s, West Coast. Journalist Luisa Rey uncovers a web of greed and murder that threatens her own life. And we move on to a dismal present-day England; to a Korean superpower in the near future where neo-capitalism is out of control; and, ultimately, to a post-apocalyptic Hawaii in the closing days of History.

But the story does not stop here. The narrative circles back through the ages and places, retracing the path to the beginning. The author reveals how his characters are connected and how their fates intertwine. And how souls traverse the heavens of time, just as clouds traverse the heavens of the world.

Cloud Atlas is an unforgettable feat that has transformed from cult classic to global phenomenon.

Until now, the Moriori were nothing more than a local variation of most pagans, with their linen skirts and feathered cloaks, in the ever-diminishing "blind spots" of the ocean that the White Man has yet to enlighten. If anything made the old Rekohu unique, however, it was their unprecedented doctrine of peace. Since time immemorial, the priestly caste of the Moriori decreed that whoever shed human blood killed his own mana—his honor, his worth, his reputation, and his soul. No Moriori would offer shelter, food, conversation, or even a glance to the unwanted. If the exiled murderer survived his first winter, the despair of loneliness would usually drive him to a cave at Cape Young, where he would end his own life.
