It hadn't been long since, analyzing my feelings, I had formed the conviction that this final separation was exactly what I desired, and comparing the scarcity of pleasures that Albertine offered me with the multitude of pleasures she deprived me of, I had concluded, believing of course that my thinking possessed the necessary insight, that I no longer wanted to see her, that I was no longer in love with her.

However, the words: 'Miss Albertine has left' had so deeply shattered my heart that I felt I wouldn't be able to endure it for long. Thus, what I considered insignificant was ultimately the core of my life.
