Description

The European Union is at the most critical juncture in its history. The economic crisis revealed the disparities that had formed after the adoption of the single currency within the eurozone, as well as the gradual transformation of the European Union into an asymmetrical network of states with a hierarchical structure.

The effects of the austerity policy, chosen by Berlin and Brussels as an antidote to the crisis, led to the fracturing of Europe between North and South, as well as the dynamic rise of nationalism. The book examines the formation and conditions of the post-war European project, the complex process of convergence of the interests of European states, and analyzes the deeper causes of the economic crisis, focusing on the flawed architecture of the eurozone project, the Greek fuse of the crisis, and the critical shift of the historical Franco-German axis towards Berlin.

It then describes the dramatic consequences of the crisis in Greece and Southern Europe, the new European political landscape, the resurgence of extreme ideologies, as well as Europe's precariousness in the face of extremely significant challenges, such as the European elections in May.

Europe is now at the center of opposing forces: between the weakened European project of political convergence, historically persistent national strategies, and the uncontrollable momentum of globalization dynamics. In the face of the crisis and its structural causes, the escalating anti-European sentiment, and the re-emergence of the most critical issue in modern European history—the position of a newly strong Germany at the center of Europe—the restart of the European project is a one-way street to avoid historical mistakes and create a new narrative centered on the idea of a united Europe.
