Heinrich Himmler has strong claims to being Adolf Hitler's most powerful servant. He was certainly the main architect of the Holocaust. Appointed Reichsführer-SS in 1929, he built the SS into a paramilitary force of one million members, taking control of the Nazi concentration camp system. From 1943, he became Head of the German Police and Minister of the Interior with command of the Gestapo, as well as the Einsatzgruppen, who committed horrific atrocities and murders in occupied Eastern Europe and Russia.
Despite his lack of military experience during the final stages of the War, he was appointed by Hitler as Commander of the Army Vistula. Realizing the war was lost, Himmler attempted to open peace talks with the Allies. Learning of this, Hitler dismissed him from all his positions in April 1945. He was captured and detained by British forces, where he committed suicide on May 22, 1945.
