Description & Specifications

This volume covers the infantry units of Napoleon's Imperial Army during the decisive years 1800-1815. When the future emperor took control of France, his army's infantry was disorganized and poorly equipped, lacking discipline, and trained in a rather outdated manner. Napoleon reacted very quickly to resolve the main problems of his soldiers by giving them new structure and teaching them new tactics. By 1805, the French infantry was undoubtedly the best in the world in terms of its combat capabilities. The book covers all categories of units that were part of Napoleon's infantry: regular regiments, light regiments, foreign cohorts, and special cohorts. It is not always known that the French infantry of 1800-1815 included large numbers of foreign soldiers, even an Irish Legion; all these lesser-known corps are taken into account, along with many special cohorts such as the Corsican light infantry and the mountain infantry. Gabriele Esposito provides a complete guide to Napoleon's French infantry, illustrated with rare contemporary uniforms that have never been published before.
