Theoharis E. Detorakis (born 1936) is a professor emeritus of Byzantine philology at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Crete. His love for his native land and its tumultuous history led him early on to research and study Cretan affairs.
Crete was at the center of his scientific interests and was served alongside Byzantine philology. He is a well-known Cretan scholar and has published more than fifty papers on Cretan topics, including historical, philological, linguistic, and folklore issues.
In the fall of 1985, he was awarded the "Nikos Kazantzakis" prize by the Municipality of Heraklion, Crete "for the quality and extent of his scientific contribution."
