The division was involved in a fierce campaign against the communist resistance of the Yugoslav Partisans in occupied Serbia and Montenegro. It was named "Prinz Eugen" in honor of Prince Eugene of Savoy, an eminent general of the Habsburg Empire who liberated the Banat and Belgrade from the Ottoman Empire during the Austro-Turkish War.
