This book examines the hero cults of Sparta based on archaeological and literary evidence. Nicolette Pavlides analyzes the local peculiarities of a pan-Hellenic phenomenon, which can help us understand the role and function of heroes in Greek religion. Although it has been observed that hero worship was particularly popular in Sparta, little is known about the cults, both in terms of material evidence and in the historical context for their popularity. The evidence from the cult of Helen and Menelaus at the Menelaion, the cult of Agamemnon and Alexandra/Cassandra, the Dioscuri, and others who remain anonymous to us, are considered a local phenomenon that reflects the developing community and social consciousness of the city. Moreover, through an analysis of the typology of the cults, it is concluded that in Sparta, the boundaries of the divine/heroic/mortal were fluid, allowing great variety in the expression of worship. The votive offerings, topography, and architectural evidence allow an analysis of the types of offerings to the hero cults and an evaluation of the architecture that housed such cults. Due to the material and spatial distribution of votive deposits, it is argued that Sparta had a large number of heroic sanctuaries scattered throughout the city, testifying to an enthusiastic and long-standing local practice of dedications at the municipal level.
