In 1959, the newly established kingdom of Laos was transforming into a battleground for the superpowers' competition during the Cold War, born out of the chaos that followed the French defeat and their withdrawal from Indochina in 1954. The country soon plunged into a rapidly evolving civil war as opposing forces sought to gain power and foreign intervention fueled the struggle. Particularly, the geography of "neutral" Laos was increasingly involved in the escalating war in neighboring South Vietnam, as Ho Chi Minh's reliance on the Ho Chi Minh trail for transporting men and materials grew exponentially, making it the target of American intervention.
For nearly twenty years, the battles between the pro-Western government of Laos and the communists supported by the Pathet Lao raged over plains, jungles, and mountain peaks, largely unnoticed by the rest of the world in this so-called "secret war." Thousands on each side would lose their lives, and many more would be displaced as the conflict on the battlefield came and went from season to season and year to year. In the skies above Laos, planes from the United States and royal Laos would drop their deadly payloads, destroying vast swathes of the countryside in the pursuit of victory. Nearly 3 million tons of bombs would be dropped on Laotian soil between 1965 and 1973, leaving a deadly legacy of explosive remnants that remain to this day. Thus, the fight for Laos is the story of entire communities and generations embroiled in a seemingly endless war, one that pits conflicting foreign interests and their proxies against each other, and one that is inextricably linked to Washington's pursuit of victory in Vietnam.
