The expert author Michael Green has compiled a comprehensive inventory of tanks developed and used by the Allied forces during the six-year war against Nazi Germany and its allies. There were four categories of tanks: Light, Medium, Heavy, and Super-Heavy.
Battle experience proved that light tanks (such as the Stuart and T-26) were ineffective. Medium tanks (the US M4 series, known as Sherman by the British, and the Russian T-34) quickly dominated with their firepower, protection, and mobility. In the later stages of the War, the Allies needed to respond to the Axis Panthers and Tigers with upgraded and reinforced second-generation M4, T-34-85, and Sherman Firefly.
Completely new heavy tanks like the M-26 Pershing, the Soviet KV-1 series, and the British Centurion saw action only in the last months. The book "Allied Tanks of the Second World War" covers these categories in detail, as well as the few super-heavy tanks like the French Char 2C and the TOG. For an informative and richly illustrated work, this book has no comparable rival.
