This book is a narrative account of a decade of turmoil, beginning with the millennium celebrations of Rome in 248 AD and ending with the capture of Emperor Valerian by the Persians in 260 AD. It was a period of nearly unbroken destruction for Rome, involving a series of civil wars, several major invasions by Goths and Persians, economic crisis, and a pandemic throughout the empire, the 'Plague of Cyprian'. There was continued persecution of Christians. A central theme of the book is that this was a period of moral and spiritual crisis, where the traditional state religion suffered significant damage, paving the way for the eventual triumph of Christianity.
The recent remarkable discovery of extensive fragments of the lost 'Scythica' by Dexippus sheds new light on the Gothic Wars of the period. The author has used this new evidence combined with in-depth interrogations in the field to develop a revised narrative of the events surrounding the great battle of Abritus, where Emperor Decius's army was annihilated by the Goths of Cniva.
