Description

The Roman conquests of Macedonia in the 2nd century BC led to the expansion of their power over the troublesome tribes of Thrace south of the Danube. However, their new neighbor on the other side of the river, the kingdom of Dacia, proved to be an increasing threat to the Roman Empire. This inevitably led to Roman attempts at invasion and conquest. It is a measure of the Dacians' skill and resilience that it took many fierce campaigns over more than a century before their kingdom was added to the Roman Empire. It was one of the last significant acquisitions of the empire (and indeed of short duration).

Dr. Michael Schmitz follows the Roman involvement in the Danube region from the first contact with the Thracians after the Third Macedonian War in the 2nd century BC to the final conquest of Dacia by Trajan in the early 2nd century AD. Like the other volumes in this series, this book offers a clear narrative of the course of these wars, explaining how the Roman war machine faced new defiant enemies and the challenges of unfamiliar terrain and climate. Specially commissioned colored illustrations bring to life the main types of troops with detail that has been meticulously researched.
