The Royal Marines are known for their military skills and for having one of the best military bands in the world. These highly trained and talented musicians are just as comfortable parading at Buckingham Palace as they are at the Royal Albert Hall or on the deck of an aircraft carrier in a foreign port.
But why, when the Argentinians invaded the Falklands in April 1982, did these wonderful musicians get involved in a serious and deadly military campaign? The answer is that, aside from their musical ability, the members of the RM Band are trained for military service and fully proficient in a range of military and medical skills, providing support to their comrades, the combat marines.
The Band that Went to War is a vivid narrative of the Falklands War as it has never been told before. It describes the roles played by the Royal Marines musicians in the conflict: evacuating the wounded by helicopter, moving tons of supplies and ammunition, burying the dead at sea, and guarding and repatriating Argentine prisoners of war. These and other unseen tasks were completed while they were still ready to provide music to boost morale to the accompanying marines and other front-line forces.
