Description & Specifications

When the Allied forces landed on the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944, the backbone of the armored response awaiting them consisted of 758 Pzkpfw IV tanks, a number representing almost half of the fully tracked vehicles available for the defense of the West. The first models of these tanks had entered service in November 1937, and although replacements had been considered, the original design was continuously upgraded with new features and better armor. While perhaps not having the glamour of the Panther and Tiger, the latest variant, the Pzkpfw IV ausf H, was at least equal to the best British and American tanks. Dennis Oliver, drawing on official documents and unit histories, explores the formations operating these legendary vehicles and uses archived photos and extensively researched color illustrations to examine the markings, camouflage, and technical aspects of the Pzkpfw IV tanks serving on the Western Front during the critical summer of 1944. A central section of his book showcases available models and aftermarket products, complemented by a gallery of beautifully crafted and painted models in various scales. Technical details are also examined, as well as modifications introduced during production and in the field, providing everything the modeler needs to recreate an accurate representation of these historic vehicles.
