March 1944: Japan launches its bold attack on India from Burma. The British, taken by surprise, find themselves exposed and defenseless, except for the untrained 50th Indian Parachute Brigade that was training in the jungle around Manipur.
After a series of fierce battles, the paratroopers entrenched themselves in the isolated Naga village of Sangshak, high in the mountains of Manipur. Defending with unwavering determination against a determined enemy, the Brigade repelled waves of assaults with bloody close combat. Despite the lack of ammunition and supplies, as well as mounting casualties, the defenders held on for a crucial week before escaping through the mountainous region back to the British lines.
The book "Fight Your Way Out" describes this lesser-known yet critical first large-scale battle between Indian and Japanese troops on Indian soil. The siege is detailed using first-hand accounts, as well as their daring escape through the jungle and the experiences of the Indian and British survivors captured by the Japanese.
The battle at Sangshak was an encouraging first sign for the previously undefeated Japan. This battle cost the invaders valuable time from which they never recovered and laid the foundations for their eventual defeat in the final battles of Kohima and Imphal.
