For almost a century, Social Democracy dominated Sweden, which seemed to be on the verge of transforming into a truly socialist country. However, what followed was a sharp adjustment to an emerging neoliberal global order. Large sections of the public sector were privatized, social inequality rapidly worsens, and right-wing populists represent a large part of the working class.
Östberg examines the reformist strategy, class organizations and social mobilization, the struggle of women, and the creation of the Swedish welfare society. It is a story emblematic of transformations in global politics over the last half-century.
